The Riyadh City Royal Commission announced on Sunday the start of the first phase of the Riyadh Buses service as part of the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project.
The commission has set the ticket price for the Riyadh bus trip at SR4. The ticket is valid for two hours, beginning with the first login to board the bus or activation via the app. During the two-hour period, the same ticket can be used to board another bus, and the ticket purchase mechanism has also been simplified to benefit from the service.
The bus service is part of the first phase of the King Abdulaziz Public Transportation Project. This $22.5 billion project, which includes trains and buses, is the world’s largest public transportation project.
The Riyadh Buses network, with over 800 buses, will have a total length of 1,900 km when its five phases are fully operational, according to the commission. This will be run on 86 lanes and will serve passengers at over 2,900 stations and stopping points.
The bus service will contribute to the ease of movement for all segments of society by using buses to reach places of work, educational institutions, and recreational centers, as well as reducing reliance on private cars and thus easing traffic congestion in the capital city.
The Riyadh Metro, or electric train network, is the city’s backbone, consisting of six tracks totaling 176 kilometers in length. The Riyadh Metro is one of the world’s largest construction projects. It has 85 railway stations in addition to six major metro lines that cover the capital city of Riyadh from all directions.
The public transportation project will be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The commission confirmed that the first phase of the Riyadh Buses project, which was developed as one of the strategic projects aimed at serving the city’s mobility needs, making a quantum leap in the public transportation sector, strengthening the interconnection of parts of the capital, and raising the quality of life for its residents and visitors, has begun.
