Saudization of the optical sector in Saudi Arabia

After the grace period for the decision on Saudization of the optical sector expired, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development announced that the decision to localize the optical sector would take effect in all regions of the Kingdom on March 18, 2023 (08/26/1444 AH).

This is a continuation of the Ministry’s initiatives to provide an engaging and productive work environment for both male and female Saudi citizens, increase their level of engagement in the Saudi labor market, and increase their contribution to the economy.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry on Saturday, the Saudization decision in the optical sector includes a 50% localization of two professions, which are

1. Medical ophthalmologist and
2. A technician for spectacles.

The Ministry will provide a package of incentives and assistance to private sector businesses in order to encourage them to hire Saudi nationals. This will include assisting with the hiring process and looking for qualified candidates, assisting with the necessary training and qualification process, and assisting with the employment and job stability process for Saudi citizens. Furthermore, giving preference to Saudis receiving benefits from the system’s Saudization support programs via the Human Resources Development Fund, as well as supporting a company’s efforts to hire Saudis in order to provide more quality job opportunities.

The Ministry issued a directive outlining the specifics of the decision as well as the process for implementing it. It emphasized the importance of facilities adhering to and carrying out the directive in order to avoid the severe fines that will be imposed on violators.
