Itikaf Performance Guidelines

Here are some guidelines to follow when performing Itikaf in Makkah’s Masjid al-Haram.

Essential Packing List

Because the Itikaf will last 9 to 10 days, 5 sets of clothes are sufficient. It is best for the ladies to bring an extra hijab and abaya.

• Bring hand wipes, oud, deodorant, tissue, comb, spare glasses, toothbrush, and toothpaste.
• Charger for your phone, but remember not to use it during Itikaf.
• Prayer rug
• Sleeping accessories such as blankets, inflatable pillows, and so on.
• It is best to have a sleeping bag that can be stuffed with all of your belongings for safety and that can be easily carried to a prayer location.

Where should I eat?

Iftar will be no problem because it is served. If you are outside, the management will distribute small Iftar packs containing dates, juice, water, croissants, and other items that will keep you going until the end of Taraweeh.

You can go to the Hilton towers for suhoor and dinner. There are some fast food restaurants where you can get your food.

How do you deal with crowds?

On Fridays, under no circumstances should you leave the mosque before Friday prayers.
Furthermore, if you leave the mosque for any reason on the 29th night during Khatamul Quran or the completion of the Quran, you will be denied entry.

Leaving the Mosque

The most serious offense that can break or invalidate Itikaf is leaving the mosque without a valid reason. For legitimate reasons, one may leave the mosque during Itikaf. For example, if one needs to take a bath, use the restroom, perform a ghusl, or even get food, one may leave the mosque during Itikaf.

If the Motikif leaves the mosque without a valid reason, his Itikaf is null and void. Because mosques nowadays are well-equipped with restrooms, it is less likely that people will leave the mosque during Itikaf.

Intercourse with the Partner

The second act that can break or invalidate Itikaf is having sexual relations with the partner. So, if a Motikif has a sexual relationship with his wife, he is breaking his Itikaf. Allah clearly states in the Holy Quran that you should not associate with your wives while in an Itikaf.

“Do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques” – Quran 2:187

However, if the wife or husband touch or kiss each other passionately, some scholars believe it is mukroo, while others believe it breaks or invalidates Itikaf. However, Allah knows best, and no doubtful acts shall be performed.

Menstruation or post birth bleeding

Menstruation, also known as postnatal bleeding or post-childbirth bleeding, is the third factor that can break or invalidate Itikaf.

Committing a Serious Sin

Committing a major sin is the fourth act that can break or invalidate Itikaf. So, if someone commits a major sin, his Itikaf is null and void.

Insanity

The fifth condition is insanity. Insanity is caused by madness, taking drugs or intoxicants, or drinking alcohol. This is because the ibadah must be performed while the person is sane; any ibadah performed while insane is invalid.

Shirk
Shirk, or ascribe partners to Allah, is the last thing that can break or invalidate Itikaf. Allah says in the Holy Quran that it has been revealed to you, as it has been revealed to the people before you, that if you join in worshiping God besides Allah, then all your worship is futile. As a result, apostasy nullifies Itikaf.

if you join in worship God besides Allah, then all your worship is fruitless. Thereby apostasy nullifies Itikaf. (Quran 39:65)
