On December 21, 2022, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed surprise and regret at the Afghan caretaker government’s decision to deny Afghan girls the right to university education.
The Ministry requested that the Kingdom reserve this decision, which has shocked all Islamic countries and contradicts giving Afghan women their full legal rights, the most important of which is the right to education, which contributes to Afghanistan’s and its brotherly people’s security, stability, development, and prosperity.

  • The United States and the United Nations both condemn the decision, calling it a violation of human rights.

Decision by Afghanistan’s caretaker government:

“You are all informed to immediately implement the mentioned order of suspending female education until further notice,” said Minister of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadeem in a letter to all government and private universities in Afghanistan.

This ban on higher education comes less than three months after thousands of girls and women across the country took university entrance exams, with many aspiring to careers in teaching and medicine. Universities are currently on winter break and will reopen in March.

Pakistan has urged the Afghan government to reconsider its decision to suspend female university students’ education:

Pakistan has urged the Taliban-led interim Afghan government to reconsider its decision to suspend university education for female students in Afghanistan.

In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry stated that it was disappointed to learn of the suspension of university and higher education for female students in Afghanistan.

According to the Ministry, Pakistan’s position on this issue has been clear and consistent from the start, as Pakistan firmly believes that every man and woman has the right to education in accordance with Islamic teachings.
