Dr. Yousef Al-Qurashi, associate professor of sleep disorders at Saudi Arabia’s Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University, described the most serious consequences of staying up late on human health.
Throughout an interview with MBC on Friday, he stated that the most serious of these effects is excessive drowsiness during the day, which can lead to traffic accidents.
- Al-Qurashi noted that studies show that sleepiness causes 20% of road accidents as a result of staying up late, emphasizing that staying up late affects the work of the heart and produces blood pressure, insulin resistance, and weak immunity.
- He went on to say that a recent research found that 45% of schoolchildren do not get enough sleep, and that there have been studies that link not getting enough sleep to mortality.
- According to the associate professor, persons who sleep fewer than 5 hours per day are more likely to die early than people who sleep 7 to 8 hours each day.
