RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — The final qualifiers for the international Holy Qur’an and Call to Prayer competition, coordinated by the General Entertainment Authority and broadcast on the Otr Elkalam (Scent of Speech) TV show, are taking place in Saudi Arabia these days.
A total of 36 candidates representing various countries compete for the finest voices in reciting the Holy Qur’an and giving the Islamic call to prayer, which is raised by a muezzin at predetermined intervals throughout the day in mosques throughout the world.
Twelve participants — six from each category — will compete in the semifinals for a chance to advance to the finals. In the finals, four participants will battle for a total prize pool of SR12 million ($3.2 million).
The competition features contestants of many countries. Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, and Iran competed in the quarterfinals.
All of the candidates competed in preliminary qualifying rounds that began in 2019 with over 40,000 contestants from 80 nations competing over the Internet before going to Saudi Arabia to compete in the final qualifying rounds.
