If you’ve ever visited Makkah’s Masjid al-Haram, you’ve probably seen people sitting in small groups, performing Nikah, sipping Qahwa, and passing out dates. I’ve long questioned if doing Nikah in Masjid al-Haram is permissible.
Is it permissible to perform Nikah in Masjid al-Haram?
Do I need Wudhu (Ablution) to read the Holy Quran on my Phone?(Opens in a new browser tab)
Saudis, on the other hand, have no problem performing Nikah in Masjid-al-Haram, Makkah.
However, expats are still hesitant to perform Nikkah in Makkah. Many expatriates in Saudi Arabia discourage others from performing Nikah in Masjid al-Haram.
Is the Nikah performed in Makkah legally registered?
If you’ve ever seen someone perform Nikah in Masjid al-Haram, you’ve probably noticed that they keep a register with the names of witnesses, Mahar, and the names of the bride and groom.
This is a notebook, not a legal register. So, while your Nikah was performed religiously, it was not legally binding.
If you have an Iqama, you must go to Ahwal Shakhsia to legally register your Nikah.
On Umrah Visa Nikah in Masjid al-Haram
Some people are adamant that their Nikah be performed in Masjid al-Haram. So they obtain an Umrah visa and bring the entire family to Masjid al-Haram to perform Nikah.
Nobody stops them, and Nikah is performed religiously immediately after. In terms of religion, Nikah is nothing more than a proposal and acceptance in front of witnesses.
Even after that, they will have to register it when they return to their respective countries. There is no provision for registering a marriage in Saudi Arabia while on Umrah or a Visit Visa.
