Pfizer BioNTech has declared that they are gathering all necessary information on the Corona virus’s “Omicron” strain (Covid-19) in order to investigate the possibilities of changing our vaccines.
Pfizer BioNTech noted, “Within 100 days, we will be able to export improved vaccinations against the new strain.” According to a Pfizer representative, “we anticipate to know within two weeks if the variation is resistant to our current vaccination or requires any changes.”
- In the event that the existing vaccine is shown to be ineffective against Omicron, Moderna plans to test a variant-specific booster. Johnson & Johnson is also putting its vaccination against the Omicron strain to the test.
In the meantime, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened an expert meeting to assess the new Corona virus. Due to the discovery of a novel mutation of Covid-19, the European Commission has proposed stopping flights from southern Africa.
The Health Security Agency stated that the new strain of the Corona virus, known as “B1.1.529,” contains a so-called “spike protein” that is fundamentally different from the protein contained in the original Corona virus, on which immunizations were based.
The Guardian reports that 50 confirmed examples of the new mutant (omicron) have been found in South Africa, Hong Kong, and Botswana.
According to the researchers, the variation features a number of changes that are cause for concern since they may help it evade the immune system and become more transmissible.
